Theme copy
Being a young boy, copying was safe. Where should I know from what art is? Own inventions were much too unsatisfactory. Lessons in art at school spoiled my interest totally. Actually I did some things suggested by school, but that was really weak (see at right)! No wonder then that I didn't like that. Why all these other things (Marc, van Gogh, Macke, Monet) were supposed to be so great I didn't know either, but I was easily convinced to believe in that. Well, following Pirsig (Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance), instruction is just mere mass hypnosis. As an adult I copied only once: the Picasso. And that was interesting indeed. It was clear then how he did it, where he worked, where he scamped, where the painting was good, where bad. |
