Note on the back: Hilde is the younger sister of my mother. In January 1986, one breast of my mother had been removed because of cancer. She survived this operation for years. 2 days after that operation my father had apoplexy and fought with death for several months. He has been relatively stable since, though hemiplegic as can be seen in the photo. My mother cared for him until she had several episodes of apoplexy during the fall of 1996, following which she finally died. He then came to a charitable home. I visit him on Sundays. |

My Parents and I, February, 1993, at the wedding of my brother (born 1959, I 1948). I made a wedding album and recite from it. Both parents seem to be amused.
My father is not so well. He is uncomfortable in this wooden chair and usually
sits in a padded wheel
chair. |

My Parents and their war time friends Heinz and Grete, February, 1993, at the wedding of my brother. Heinz is native to the village I am born. Grete came from Schlesien. She served with my mother at the weather station in Stubendorf, where my parents met. I don't know where Heinz met Grete, but he told her and his parents that she should make her way to his home village in Lower Saxony in any case after the war. That's how my mother came to Hohnhorst. She did not know where to go else, hoping she would get some help in this village, too. Luckily, my mother had learnt tailor as a profession, the farmer's wives all owned sewing-machines and fabric, hence she was welcome, there was a lot of work. She went off to rescue my aunt Hilde, her younger sister, who learnt farmers work in Eger then, to be welcomed, too, by her skill. The elder sister, Marie, remained in Sudetenland, which eventually became part of Czechoslovakia. Finally in 1968, she joined us with her family and the grandparents. Heinz happened to fall victim to the Russians. He returned as war prisoner in 1948 (I was born already). Heinz and Grete are still very much in love. One of the rare examples of a happy couple I have seen. |
